Saltwater Fishing with Live Bait

Many South Florida anglers prefer using live bait for saltwater fishing, which makes perfect sense. Why use an imitation when you can use the real thing?

Some of the best live bait for saltwater fishing in South Florida includes sardines, also known as pilchards, threadfin herring, and Spanish sardines. Anglers often choose this bait, since fish are naturally drawn to the movement and scent of their prey. Most Anglers prefer to catch their own live bait. Large quantities of bait fish can be caught with a cast net and kept in a live well. Some Anglers will use a Sibiki rig if they need fewer baits or do not have a cast net. See our previous post for more information about both of these proven methods for catching live bait.

These specific fish, often called white bait, are a terrific bait for a wide variety of species. These bait fish are found in large schools just offshore and are most often free lined. This means that they are allowed to swim with just a hook in them and no other weight to hinder their movements. They are terrific baits for catching bottom species such as grouper and snapper. Offshore anglers use them to chum up tuna and other species off of area reefs and wrecks. They are also a good bait for catching snook, redfish, jacks, Spanish mackerel, and other species.
